A good mobile antivirus app scans new Android software downloads for obvious signs of tomfoolery, such as strange permissions- or download-requests. And a number of free and commercial, or paid, Android antivirus apps are currently available in the Android Market.

I can’t personally vouch for the effectiveness of them all, but in general, running one of the more popular antivirus apps is better than not running any antivirus at all. The app I’ve used most is Lookout Mobile Security.

Lookout Security and Antivirus app

Lookout is available as a free download, with a basic antivirus scanner, Find-My-Phone features to help locate lost or stolen devices and backup/restore options. You can also upgrade Lookout for more in-depth security features, but the free version should provide basic protection for average users.

Another free antivirus option is the aptly named Antivirus Free app.

Antivirus Free

Even if you choose not to constantly run an Android antivirus application, it’s a good idea to download one and scan your device occasionally for potentially harmful apps.

Google Contacts expand far beyond their use in Gmail. They return in Google Docs and can even be synchronized with an Android handset.

When you first start using it though, your contact list will be unorganized and mighty confusing, with missing, superfluous and duplicate contacts.

If you want a tidy address book, be it in Gmail or on your Android phone, you’ve got some work ahead. Below are five great tips to fight off this insurmountable mountain of contacts. Armed with these, managing your comments will be a walk in the park.

1. Standalone Contacts URL

Especially amongst newfound Android users, some people might have a Google account, but no Google mail. Although it’s the technical convention to access your contacts through Gmail, it’s not mandatory. Other users can point their browser to google.com/contacts to manage their Google contacts as well.

The screenshots below are taken from within Gmail, but will correspond to the standalone contacts page as well.

2. Import, Export & Print

Google Android Tip

If you’re a longtime Gmail user, you won’t have a shortage of contacts. Otherwise, you can use the import feature to automatically add them from a CSV file – as used in Outlook (Express), Yahoo!, Hotmail and the like – or a vCard.

Likewise, Gmail will also export contacts in CSV, as a vCard, or even print them. This last option allows you to choose the (for you) relevant information and contacts group that needs to be printed.

3. My Contacts Vs All Contacts

Google Android Tip my contacts vs all contacts

The contacts interface is trifold; on the far left you’ve got the contact groups, in the middle the contents of the selected group, and on the right is a detailed overview of the selected contact(s). Most important is the difference between My Contacts and All Contacts.

My Contacts are all those people you’ve consciously chosen to add. This group is contained in the larger All Contacts group – basically all the people you’ve been in contact with.

If you’re taking out the proverbial trash, you’ll want to add a number of people to your My Contacts. Apart from manually skimming the list, it’s advised to check out the Most Contacted people, as well as the View Suggestions feature when you have My Contacts selected.

4. Grouping Contacts

Google Android Tip grouping contacts

With a bigger address book, you’ll want to create additional contact groups. Friends, Family and Coworkers are added by default, or you can create custom groups by clicking the second icon in the top left corner.

Once you’ve selected all relevant contacts in the middle column, you can add (or remove) them to groups in the top right corner. Selecting all contacts ‘per group’ works faster than reallocating them one by one, but increases the chance likelihood of overseeing some individual contacts.

5. Find & Merge Duplicates

Google Android Tip duplicate contacts

Especially if you’ve imported contacts from multiple sources – or recently decided to mix your phonebook in with your email addresses, you’re bound to have a few duplicates.

Again in the My Contacts overview, you’ll be able to ‘Find duplicates’. This will spot contacts with a common name and allow you to merge them automatically. Note that duplicates with different names or terms will remain and different contacts with insufficient information (i.e. missing surname) might be merged, so be wary.

Google Android Tip merge contacts

The bulk of contacts will have to be merged manually, either because they use different names, or because they’re listed by email address. To merge, select two or more contacts from the list and press Merge these x contacts. View and edit the new, merged contact and press Save.

Dolphin Browser

The default Android browser has quite a number of shortcomings and many power users should have already installed the Dolphin Browser app for a better browsing experience on Android. There are quite a few things you can do to make your browsing experience on Dolphin even better, and here are some of them:

1. Long Press Tab Bar for Close Options

When you long press the tab bar, you can access three options: Close tab, Close other tabs and Close all tabs. Pretty neat and rarely noticed, these options could come in handy once in a while.

Dolphin Browser close options

2. Reclaim the Pinch to Zoom Button

If you’ve frequently used the pinch to zoom button in the default Android browser, you can use the same button in Dolphin as well. Just press the Menu key on your phone, choose Settings and check Show Pinch-Zoom Button. This is especially useful if you’re using an Android phone with a resistive touchscreen.

Dolphin Browser zoom button

3. Save Cache to SD

If your phone is low on internal memory and you frequently get the low space warning, make Dolphin store web page cache on your phone’s SD card instead. Just go to Settings > Advanced Settings and check Cache to SD.

Dolphin Browser save cache

4. Save Bandwidth With Google Mobile View

Web pages downloaded via google.com/gwt are formatted for mobile viewing, and are much smaller in size. If you really don’t care about how sites look, and if you are on an expensive data connection, hit the Menu button, choose More and hit Google Mobile View.

Dolphin Browser mobile view

5. Quick Access Settings

If you thought the easiest way to open Settings was by pressing the Menu button on your phone, click More and choose Settings, think again. Just slide to the right when you’re browsing and you’ll see the Dolphin toolbar from where you can launch settings by tapping the icon at the bottom. A few seconds saved. Helps!

Dolphin Browser quick access setting

6. Backup Bookmarks and Settings

Go to Advanced Settings and click the Backup option to create a backup file on the SD card with your bookmarks and settings. You can restore it anytime you want, and get your customizations back in no time.

7. Change Useragent to View Restricted Sites

Dolphin Browser gives you an option to quickly change the useragent. Using this option, you can instantly view sites that are restricted to Android (hey, you can download popular magazines). You can also choose the user agent as ‘Desktop’ to instantly switch over to desktop versions of web pages.

Browser tips

Keep the zoom button pressed to set the display/font size that you are comfortable with.

I use the trackball a lot with the browser set to landscape mode. It allows you to browse with out opening the keyboard. The menu keys proximity to the trackball makes browsing easier.

If opening the keyboad to browse is your thing, you can use alt+scrollball to fast scroll.

Double touch an area on the browser and the page centers to that area.

Click shift button and use the scrollball to select an area starting with the cursor.

Use Menu+X to Cut, Menu+V to Paste in text fields. Oh, Menu+C is copy.

New windows can be set to open in the background so that you don’t have to look at loading screens. Long press trackball on a link to see more options for that link, including open in a new window.

Doubleclick on the trackball twice to show the entire page and the magnify too.

Use google reader!

World War game

If you are starting out this game, this is probably the post that you want to read. I actually got to $1 million per hour in 4 days time, and $10 million per hour in less than 2 weeks. I see a lot of people commenting about the benefits of camping / leveling too fast – and I just cringe. I hate playing slow. If your strategy and personality is to grow slowly and surely, look away for ye shall be blown away. If you are like me and like to grow your country exponentially (literally) and always be the unconquerable country at every level read on! Shameful marketing first “PXWPMD”

So drum roll please, what do I do differently that sets me apart from all the other commentators. The cardinal rule: sell your soul and become a sanction whore. Starting at level 5, or whatever level that allows you to attack people on the sanction list, hound the sanctions list like fat kid hounds chocolate pie. With only 12 units all together I just kept on attacking people who were sanctioned for $3+ million. The rough probability of me getting the kill works out to be 1/3 ~ 1/4. Think about it. 1 supply depot generates that much cash in 3000+ hours, I get this much cash in less than one minute. AND by refilling my health or waiting for my ammo bar to get up, I keep on doing it over and over. If you have an “aha” moment or hallelujah! moment, don’t forget to add me “PXWPMD”

Side note: Please don’t spend your actual money to buy money. I cringed at the post earlier where this commentator happily pronounced he bought 510 honor points. With this strategy, you will make more money than he does…

O ye “PXWPMD”, are there any tips for attacking those who are on the sanctions list. Yes, by now I assume I have your attention, so please take the time to add me.

*Pause*

*Pause*

Ok, I hope by now you have added me and convinced all your friends and grandparents to add me. Not yet?

*Pause*

*Don’t be lazy, add me! PXWPMD*

I typically attack only those who are lvl 150 or less. Yes, as wimpy level 5, I grew some balls and chucked it at the guy who is lvl 150 sanctioned for millions. After you roamed the sanctions list long enough, you will begin to realize that there are just some, I hate to use this word but what is “ephing dooshbags” in French whose country names just never disappear. DON’T attack them, because their country will never go away. I don’t know how they do it but don’t sink your ammo with them. What else… oh yeah, develop a fast reflex, the good targets don’t last on the sanctions list for more than 3 seconds.

Now, the only reason why I am disclosing this (and I know a lot of people don’t do this because their K/D ratio is good) is because PXWPMD’s testes are huge. Actually, well that too, I’ve reached the point where the cost benefit of me attacking people on the sanctions list doesn’t make any sense. PXWPMD can just sit on his butt and count on his property to make enough money.

You can go back to reading the basic strategy *PXWPMD laughs*, like ROI (which is actually shaped up my decision making a lot), alliance number, blah, blah, snore… But with this strategy, your testes will be literally as big as PXWPMD’s in NO time and you can use it to bungee jump in front of your opponents. I know some people have been nursing their country for months, I bounced over that and some more in 4 days.

What is PXWPMD’s K/D ratio by now anyway? Pretty ****ty, hahahahahha. It’s 633 to 1651 fights lost, with 494 sanction kills. Does this mean PXWPMD full of it? If by full of it, you mean full of awesomeness, then yes. 99.5% of it is because PXWPMD lost a sanction fight to pimped out level 150. (If you lose a fight, but you knock the other guy’s health to zero, you still get the money). The other 0.4% is because his gf is angry at him ignoring her. Remember I said 1/3 – 1/4 of the time you win a sanctions fight. Well, the loss of 1651 time means I sanction attack that many times. 494 / 1651 about 30%. Remember how I said 1/3 to 1/4 of the time you will win money? 633 is, well, as I said earlier pure awesomeness.

Anyway, I know I did a lot of shameful marketing for PXWPMD, but I hope this post helped you.

If you use your Android phone for Business or similar then it is likely that you will have important files on there that you don’t want anyone to get their hands on. They could be documents or other files such as Pdf’s that you have created on the device or stored on the device. The important thing is that they need to be kept safe!

Encryption Manager app

Encryption Manager is an app that makes it incredibly easy to apply AES 256 bit encryption to any of the files stored on your SD Card. When you first open up the app, you are asked to create a master password that you will be required to keep safe as there is no way of recovering it if you forget it. Once you enter the password, the app will scan for files on your SD Card and you can encrypt a file by pressing on the file name and pressing “manage encrypted”. The file will now be listed on the home of the app where you can open and decrypt the file. You will need to decrypt a file before you can access it and the file will not be visible on the SD card while it is encrypted.

There are a few settings you can play around with but the app doesn’t need but it is that simple to encrypt a file with Encryption Manager.

Pros

Easy to use – I found that the app only has a very small learning curve so you should be able to encrypt your files in no time. The app could have a slightly more intuitive user interface but it makes up for this by being very uncomplicated.

Secure – As far I can see, the app is very secure as it allows you to encrypt files with 256 bit encryption and there is no way to recover a password which means potential thieves won’t be able to use password recovery to find your password.

Cons

No recover password option – Although the lack of password recovery makes the files more secure, it also increases the risk of losing your files. If you forget your password, you will never be able to access those important files that you stored. If you have a bad memory, write the password down. I know writing down passwords makes the login less secure, it’s better than losing your files though!

Conclusion

Encryption Manager costs $4.16 US (£2.52 UK) which is quite expensive for an Android app. If you have important files that you want to encrypt then this app will definitely be worth the money because it will save you a huge amount of hassle encrypting files on your desktop.

Download & Install:

1. Open Android Market and searching for Encryption Manager by giraone

2. QR code:

And follow the screen instructions to process with the installation.

If you enabled Google sync when you set up your Android phone, your Android phone will sync all of your contact information with Google.com/contacts.

So, if you ever need a phone number or address and don’t have your Android mobile to hand but have access to the internet, go to Google Contacts and the latest contact info will all be there. You can also use Google Contacts to edit the info which will be much faster than using your phone to edit them.

The most addictive racing game with realistic controls, updated regularly with new features, adding 100k new players every day!

Drive 50+ cars from Integra to Evo to Veyron SS

Buy performance upgrades and tune your car

 Challenge other racers online!

 XPERIA PLAY Optimized

Drag Racing is also available on the Amazon Appstore. Please note that you can’t import your existing DR progress in the Amazon Premium version at this time.

*** TIPS:

1. Racing

Blue/green lights on dashboard will help you launch and shift at the right time

If there is too much wheelspin, you are not going anywhere

Once you learn how to drive properly, ignore the lights and find your own winning strategy

Nitrous is more effective on underpowered cars with lots of grip. Timing is crucial!

2. Cars and upgrades

Test drive before you buy a car!

The more your car costs, the tougher opposition you’ll face both offline and online

Upgrades count towards increasing car cost/level, while tuning doesn’t

Keep your car cost just under your level cap to get an advantage

Adjusting gear ratios (Garage -> Upgrade -> Tune) is costly, but lets you achieve times that are impossible on stock settings

3. Game modes and winnings

Race against beginner/amateur AI to get some quick cash and build your car

Defeat bosses and unlock achievements for extra RP

Go online and race against others to earn maximum cash/RP

If your car isn’t ready for online races, earn some cash in “Drivers Battle”

For the ultimate challenge, race against top players in Pro League

4. Misc

Join facebook.com/DragRacingGame for news and strategy

Try playing with vibration on (enable it in the “Settings” menu)!

If the game runs slow on your phone, use the task manager to kill unnecessary background tasks, or reboot the device
